Wellness Rant

Yesterday I took my final for "Intro to Wellness". This one credit, once a week course is the only chance my university had to teach most of these students anything at all about wellness. While some of the course was useful, overall it was a waste of time and a lost opportunity.
As an example of how bad it was, the final exam, the last chance to test if these students learned any important lessons about wellness, ended with a question about which part of the atmospher the "ozone layer" is in!?!?! WTF! What does that have to do with wellness! Other questions included what acts as a reservour for West Nile Virus (birds) and what type of pathogen is ringworm (its a fungus, I got that wrong). Great stuff to know in a class on biology or earth science, but WELLNESS?!
Ugg, thank goodness I'm almost done!

Wow, as somebody about to start college (late), I gotta say that this is something I'm kinda worried about :-/ Hopefully this is just the beginning stages of an important topic being taught? Or are a lot of classes sort'a like that?
Well, don't worry too much. The majority of classes I've taken on a variety of topics (at three universities in total) have been worthwhile. This class was sort of a joke class that everyone just has to take. Being more inclined to appreciate the importance of wellness, I just felt that it was a sadly missed opportunity. Good luck with your school!
That *is* a “sadly missed opportunity.” I don't think any classes should be a throwaway. I hope on the course evaluation you made your concerns known. If not, you should print out your blog post and mail it in to the school! Maybe you can help change the way that course is taught.
I was the last person to hand in the evaluation because I wrote so much :-) I don't have a great deal of faith in the evals though.
